What to Expect

Hedd Piper BSc DC MRCC

I have been helping people with back pain and back related problems for almost 20 years now and am extremely enthusiastic about putting you in charge of your recovery.

My clinical strength lies in my openness to any plausible explanation of why you are experiencing pain.  Despite being a fully registered and experienced chiropractor I have for many years put aside any belief that chiropractic manipulation, or any type of manual therapy for that matter, is the answer to the complex problem of pain.

I feel very strongly that if we are able to meet and discuss the story of your pain without any expectation of a quick fix then we can work together effectively to come up with some solutions for your problem.

This means that I would like to listen you carefully talking about your pain and how it affects you.  I need to know what you think is causing your pain and what it is about the pain that worries you.

I would like to know what it is this pain is stopping you from doing or enjoying.  Let's then work at getting you back to it over a reasonable amount of time.  Having a goal to aim for will motivate our plans.

We now understand that episodes of back pain are closely linked to wider factors going on in your life and so I am going to ask you about your health, your lifestyle, your stress levels, your sleep, your exercise.

Don't worry - I know your pain isn't in your head.

I am going to use all of the tests I know to narrow down the cause of your pain.  In many cases the way you describe your symptoms and how they behave will give me great clues into what's really going on.  I can only recommend that we go ahead and work on your problem if I can be confident that I can help you.  If it seems that we need more information via tests or that it becomes clear that your problem needs help from a different health care professional then I am going to tell you about this as soon as possible.  I won't waste your time or money.

I would like you to know that I am going to piece this problem together in a way that you will be able to understand what is going on so that you feel more in charge of it.

I need you to know that this will take time and patience.  Despite all of the advances in science and technology, back pain remains the common cold of the orthopaedic world - we have not found the cure, but we may be able to suffer from it less.

By learning the reasons behind your back pain you will be able to manage further episodes, hopefully without the need to see anyone about it.  Going through a series of sessions will lay an important foundation for you.

Lastly I'd like you to know that I take helping you very seriously, but that we can still have fun along the way.
